Welcome to Simsbury High School, home of the Trojans!
Simsbury High School is a comprehensive high school with a long-standing tradition of excellence. Our students benefit from an impressive variety of academic, athletic, and extracurricular offerings, and close connections with staff members that are truly dedicated to their success. Absence Procedure, Days 1-9:
To report a student’s absence from school for the first 9 instances (days 1-9), a parent/guardian should notify the school by emailing the attendance inbox before 9:00 a.m. at shsattendance@simsburyschools.net. An email that contains the information below will serve as absence notification for a “parent excused absence”; a handwritten note is not needed. Please include:
- student’s full name
- grade
- reason for absence
- date
- daytime phone number where a parent/guardian can be reached to verify the email or note if needed
Absence Procedure Days 10 and beyond:
For the student’s 10th absence and all absences thereafter, it is considered an excused absence with verifiable documentation for the following reasons:
- student illness:
- signed note from a medical professional, who may be the school nurse, who has evaluated the student confirming the absence and given an expected return date; notes should be submitted to the nurse's office; or
- signed note from the school nurse who has spoken with the student’s medical professional and confirmed the absence, including the date and location of the consultation.
- religious holidays
- mandated court appearances:
- a police summons;
- a subpoena;
- a notice to appear;
- a signed note from a court official; or
- other official, written documentation of the legal requirement to appear in court.
- funeral or death in the family, or other emergency beyond the control of the student’s family - a written document must explain the nature of the emergency.
- extraordinary educational opportunity pre-approved by the district administrators and in accordance with Connecticut State Department of Education guidance and this policy: written pre-approval from the administration, in accordance with this regulation.
- lack of transportation that is normally provided by a district other than the one the student attends.
- mental health wellness days: Students may take two (2) non-consecutive mental health days as approved per state mandate. A parent/guardian must submit an email to verify.
If email or written notification from a parent/guardian has not been received, the absence will remain “unexcused”. In addition, the assistant principal’s office will continue to contact the family and student to acquire proper documentation. Students may receive a consequence for failure to provide documentation. Students who miss school for an excused absence have two (2) days to make up work, unless an alternate plan has been made with the teacher.

Simsbury Public Schools reserves the right to randomly audit email documentation received to determine its authenticity.

Students who need to be dismissed early must provide written notification to the Attendance Office no later than 9:00 a.m. via written note or email sent to shsattendance@simsburyschools.net. Students will receive an early dismissal pass and must report to the Attendance Office at the designated time to be officially signed out. The early dismissal will be coded as an unexcused absence until verifiable documentation is received. If a student has an electronic appointment confirmation, this may be included with the initial written notification and will be coded as an excused dismissal. If a student is unable to provide verifiable documentation for why they left, disciplinary action will be taken. This will impact a student’s ability to participate in after school sports and activities. Please note - a parent/guardian note, without SHS employee approval, is not considered verifiable documentation.
Students who become ill during the school day must report to the health office. In consultation with the parent/guardian, the school nurse will determine whether a student should remain in school or be dismissed early. If a student leaves without proper authorization, absences will be considered unexcused and could result in disciplinary action. Please note - the main office is not permitted to dismiss students for health reasons. All health related issues must go through the nurse’s office, 860-651-3361 ext. 534
Under no circumstances will a student be dismissed unless a parent/guardian or other responsible person is available. No minor student enrolled in the Simsbury Public Schools shall be removed from school during the school day or after school, except by the student’s custodial parent or legal guardian. The school administration may allow dismissal to another person upon receipt of written or verbal permission from the student’s custodial parent or legal guardian.
All students in grades 11-12 who have a free period at the start of the day during session 1 (7:32-8:29) or at the end of the day during session 6 (1:13-2:10) are allowed to come to school late or leave early with parent/guardian permission. As a closed campus, SHS does not allow students to leave school gr ounds during sessions 2-5 (8:33 a.m. - 1:09 p.m.) and return to class and extracurricular activities without verifiable documentation. Leaving for food or beverages during an open study, study hall, or scheduled lunch period is not permitted and will result in disciplinary action.
