Physical Education, Health & Wellness

Our Vision

To inspire every student to develop the knowledge, skills, confidence, and motivation to lead active, healthy, and balanced lives. Through engaging, inclusive, and standards-based learning experiences, we cultivate physically literate graduates who demonstrate responsibility, resilience, and lifelong habits of wellness.

Guiding Beliefs - We believe that every student deserves opportunities to:

  • Develop the knowledge, skills, confidence, and motivation to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity and wellness.
  • Experience success in an inclusive environment where every student feels valued, supported, and challenged.
  • Build healthy habits through meaningful learning experiences that connect movement, physical health, mental health, nutrition, personal safety, and decision-making.
  • Learn through active participation, inquiry, and reflection
  • ⇒ Apply the knowledge and skills learned in Physical Education, Health and Wellness beyond the classroom and throughout their lives.

Our Commitment to Every Student

  • PE, Health and Wellness classes are active, engaging, and meaningful.
  • Everyone belongs. Every student feels welcomed, respected, supported, and successful.
  • Students develop skills, confidence, and healthy habits that prepare them for life beyond high school.
  • Physical Education is about much more than sports. It teaches teamwork, problem-solving, communication, self-management, and perseverance.
  • Wellness classes help students make informed decisions that support their physical, emotional, social, and mental well-being.
  • We can clearly see how Physical Education and Wellness support Simsbury's Vision of a Graduate by developing communication, collaboration, critical thinking, self-direction, innovation, and global citizenship.
  • Teachers build strong partnerships with families and the community through meaningful communication and shared support of student wellness.
  • The curriculum is engaging, relevant, and prepares students to lead active, healthy, and balanced lives throughout adulthood.

What We Value

Student-Centered Learning

Students learn best when they are actively engaged through meaningful movement, inquiry, collaboration, reflection, and opportunities for voice and choice.

Physical Literacy

We believe physical literacy is the foundation of lifelong wellness. Every student should develop the competence, confidence, knowledge, and motivation to participate in physical activity throughout life.

Standards-Based/Skills-Based Learning

A coherent K-12 curriculum aligned to SHAPE America National Standards ensures students build skills and knowledge progressively over time.

Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Every student deserves equitable access to high-quality Physical Education and Wellness experiences where diversity is valued and inclusion, empathy, and respect are intentionally fostered.

Lifelong Learning

Our ultimate goal is for students to leave Simsbury High School with the confidence, knowledge, skills, and motivation to continue living active, healthy, and balanced lives long after graduation.
