Capstone
Simsbury Capstone
Simsbury Capstone supports students as they grow, apply, and showcase six “Vision of a Graduate” competencies: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, self-directed learning, innovation, and global citizenship. Through Capstone, students apply interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to authentic, real-world questions, problems, needs, and creative projects. Building these six competencies helps students prepare for success in college, work, and community life.
What Students Can Expect
Capstone courses support you as you turn a strong individual interest into a year-long, student-designed, community-connected project during your junior or senior year. As you plan and carry out your project you will receive feedback from your peers, teacher, and mentor(s). Throughout Capstone, you will strengthen your Vision of a Graduate competencies. At the end of Capstone, you will share your learning and accomplishments by creating a “product,” giving a presentation at SHS Showcase, and writing a final reflection.
What Families Can Expect
Families can promote Capstone success by asking about project ideas, being curious about what your child is currently working on, and encouraging your child to seek help from peers, a teacher, or a mentor when they have challenges or setbacks. The most successful Capstone projects are deeply interesting and meaningful to the student, and result from consistent progress throughout the year. At the end of Capstone, students share their project learning with a community audience, including family members, at our SHS Showcase event. We hope to see you there!
