Latimer Lane is a diverse and character-driven community of learners and leaders, a School of Distinction, and a Title I school with a proven track record of educational excellence and academic achievement. Each year, the faculty and administration partner in an engaging process of continuous improvement intended to further enhance student learning and growth.
Latimer Lane highly values the home-school partnership and views it as an integral part of meeting the needs of its students. Numerous opportunities exist for the parents of our 452 students to volunteer and be active members of the school community. Classroom teachers rely on parents for a variety of programs with their classrooms. The PTO, fueled by parent volunteers, works to support the existing programs of the school while also bringing new and exciting ideas and opportunities.
Teachers meet in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to share instructional strategies and to review and refine lessons within various units of study based upon student work and assessments. Differentiation of instruction to support at-risk students and to enhance learning for students exceeding goal is a focus at weekly PLC meetings. Our support staff, language arts consultant, math coach, classroom teachers, special education teachers, school psychologist, and social worker, expertly work in collaboration to meet the needs of all students. The Latimer Lane community is deeply invested in seeing all of our students succeed. As a result we educate the whole child paying equal attention to academics, social and emotional issues as well as physical safety. The staff of Latimer Lane seeks to make personal connections with our students and as a result enhance our students’ abilities to feel safe taking risks in their learning. Our character education program, The Latimer Lane Way, centers on our three character ideals: respect, responsibility, and kindness. Each day, five staff members carry around “GOTCHA Tickets” and are on the look-out for students displaying positive choices. Entire classrooms can be recognized and awarded a leaf for displaying these character traits as well. This successful program was the result of extensive collaboration between students, staff, and families.
As a result of a dedicated and knowledgeable faculty and staff, and a highly involved and supportive parent community, Latimer Lane is an exceptional institution that truly is, “A Great Place to Grow.”
Additionally, Latimer Lane proudly participates in the Hartford Region Open Choice Program. This wonderful opportunity is part of a statewide program that offers students the opportunity to attend public schools in suburban towns, and suburban students the opportunity to attend public schools in Hartford at no cost to the student’s family. Communication between families, teachers, and administrators remains constant to ensure an inclusive and positive experience for all students.

Attendance Reporting
Reporting an AbsenceTo report a student’s absence from school, a parent/guardian should notify the school by emailing the attendance inbox before 9:00 a.m. An email that contains the information below will serve as absence notification for a “parent excused absence”; a handwritten note is not needed.
Please include:
- student’s full name
- grade
- reason for absence
- date
- daytime phone number where a parent/guardian can be reached to verify the email or note if needed
If email or written notification from a parent/guardian has not been received, the absence will remain “unexcused”. In addition, the assistant principal’s office will continue to contact the family and student to acquire proper documentation. Students may receive a consequence for failure to do so. Students who miss school for an excused absence have two (2) days to make up work, unless an alternate plan has been made with the teacher. The Simsbury Public Schools reserves the right to randomly audit email documentation received to determine its authenticity.
The complete Attendance policy can be found in the Student/Parent Handbook.

Latimer Lane News - Visiting Author at Latimer Lane
Latimer Lane's grade 5 and 6 students were fortunate to hear children's author Jeanne Zulick Ferruolo speak to them about the writing process. Ms. Zulick Ferruolo explained a story chart to keep track of characters, plots, and events. Ms. Zulick Ferruolo's book, A Galaxy of Sea Stars, is on the 2023 Intermediate Nutmeg Book Award Nominee's list.

Author Ms. Rockwell Visits Latimer Lane
Latimer Lane students listen to author and illustrator Lizzy Rockwell as she spoke about her process for creating stories. Ms. Rockwell read her book, The All-Together Quilt, which was a 2021 Connecticut Book Award winner. Students asked questions about the story, the fabrics used in the quilt, and the book's illustrations.

Bingo is Back!
An enthusiastic crowd of more than 250 people filled the cafeteria at Henry James Memorial School for the return of in-person Bingo. The neon was glowing, the pizza was delicious, and the prizes were mesmerizing. Many thanks to all who helped to make this Latimer Lane event a terrific evening for everyone.

Veterans Day Drive-Thru Parade
Latimer Lane's driveway was lined with students and staff members dressed in red, white, and blue. They held signs and posters they made to show their appreciation for the Veterans' service. Students cheered, clapped, and waved U.S. flags as the Veterans made their way down the driveway.

Asian Performing Arts
Members of the Asian Performing Arts performed at Latimer Lane on a beautiful, but very windy, fall afternoon. The silk ribbon fan dance proved to be a challenge because of the breeze, but these professionals took it all in stride and continued with the show.
