What is it?

Oral language is the ability to relate stories or events in an organized and complete manner, use correct grammar, speak in longer or complete sentences, use a variety of vocabulary, understand questions, and understand basic concepts used in directions.

Why is it important?

Oral language skills are important to develop communication, socialization and early reading skills. Oral language is also critical to vocabulary development. Kindergarten students with strong oral language skills can comprehend texts with greater ease.

What can I do at home?

Engage your child in conversations about life activities, stories being read, and/or by asking questions or playing games.
