This fast-paced frolic follows the household of Chrysale and Philaminte, and the romantic ambitions of their two daughters, Armande and Henriette. Philaminte has turned her household into a convent of philosophy, thwarting the authority and affection of her husband, and her oldest daughter, Armande, has followed suit. Henriette, however, seeks to marry Clitandre (Armande’s ex-boyfriend).  When Philaminte presents Trissotin, a lousy poet whom she greatly esteems, as her choice for Henriette’s spouse, a battle of wills and hijinks ensues.
