Reading Fluency

(Grades 1-6)

What is it?

Fluency is the ability to easily recognize words, automatically read in longer phrases and attend to punctuation. Students who are fluent readers demonstrate this by using expression while reading and sounding like they are talking.

Why is it important?

When a student is a fluent reader, it is easier for them to focus on the content of the book and understand what they are reading.

What can I do at home?

Students should engage in repeated readings of familiar texts.

Record your child reading out loud at home.

Encourage your child to read to different audiences (sibling, parent, friend, pet, stuffed animal).

Parents can model fluent reading by reading aloud to their children on a daily basis.
