HJMS Annual Report &
Continuous Improvement Plan

Student Success Plan

Welcome to Henry James Memorial School (HJMS)! The purpose of this website is to provide public access to the Simsbury Public School District and its high-achieving middle school! As a community of learners, we are very proud of the academic, civic and social tradition of excellence at Henry James Memorial School. In order to achieve this continued success, our educational programs must hold true to the Simsbury School District's vision of rich and rigorous academic foundations, cultivation of personal relationships, attention to and the education of the whole child, as well as dedication to a cycle of continuous improvement. It is through these provisions that we will most effectively reach our district's vision and demonstrate evidence of its core beliefs at work in the lives of our students.

Henry James Memorial School recently engaged in an intentional, collaborative and fruitful revision of its mission statement. After multiple and deep conversations about the foundational middle school experience we must provide all students at Henry James Memorial School, we stand firm that our mission encompasses three main ideas:

CONNECTIONS * CHALLENGE* CHARACTER

Our mission states that HJMS is an inclusive community that promotes CONNECTIONS—both interpersonal and curricular. Interpersonal connections are cultivated between and among all contributors to the HJMS community so that all feel valued and have a voice. Curricular connections between classroom practice and the global society are paramount.

HJMS welcomes the CHALLENGE to prepare students for 21st century success. We foster the physical, social, emotional and intellectual potential of every student through a relevant curriculum and varied instruction that embodies critical thinking, problem solving and reflection.

HJMS supports CHARACTER development by providing opportunities for Henry James community members to be accountable, resilient and thoughtful citizens through active demonstration of "The HJ Way." The HJ Way is based upon 5 principles: Be respectful, Be kind, Be responsible, Be fair and Be trustworthy. Over the course of the school year, we recognize the many examples of The HJ Way alive and well at HJMS.

I hope that you enjoy learning more about Henry James Memorial School through the use of this website. Communication between home, school and the greater Simsbury community is paramount to our success. Therefore, please mark this as a "favorites" site, and hear about all of the wonderful contributions our students are making to our school and to the Simsbury community. You are sure to be impressed with our remarkable students and their innumerable accomplishments!

Respectfully,

Sue Homrok-Lemke
