Principal's Message

Welcome to Central School!

The Central School community has a long-standing history of educational excellence dating back to its inception as Central Grammar School in 1913. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Central School is the oldest school in Simsbury. The school recently celebrated its 100th anniversary with many activities that highlighted the school’s rich past and community legacy. This history provides a strong foundation for the school as it implements the district’s vision statement: “The Simsbury Public School District cultivates the mind, body, and character of each student. We engage students with a meaningful and rigorous academic foundation so that they can contribute to a global society with integrity, compassion, and resilience.”

Central School’s theme--“Learning the Ropes for the Voyage of Life”--reflects our belief in meeting the needs of the whole child: the mind, body, character, and creativity of each student. The six Pillars of Character--trustworthiness, citizenship, caring, respect, fairness, and responsibility-- are reinforced and celebrated throughout the year by our All Hands on Deck character education program. Students are encouraged to set high goals and give their best effort every day.

Our faculty is committed to rigorous instructional programs that foster and develop a community of learners while promoting a love of learning. Our talented and dedicated teachers work in professional learning communities weekly to support all students and to refine instructional practices. In addition, teachers work collaboratively with colleagues in the town’s other elementary schools. This supports one of the Simsbury’s Core Beliefs: “We believe in the power of collaboration and communication among faculty throughout the district.”

Additionally, our strong home/school partnership has always been a cornerstone for the success of our learners, highlighting another one of Simsbury’s Core Beliefs: “We believe that family and community partnerships enhance and enrich the learning experiences for all students and staff.” Our school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and our many community volunteers exemplify this core belief and are invaluable to our school’s strong culture and ongoing student achievement.

Central School is an accomplished school with high academic and social standards for its students, providing a caring and supportive climate that nurtures the whole child. I look forward to continuing my partnership with the Central School community this school year.

Best regards,

Beth Hennessy
