Vocabulary

What is it?

Vocabulary refers to the words children must know in order to communicate effectively. This includes both oral and reading vocabulary. Children continually learn words indirectly through listening and speaking to those around them as well as reading on their own.

Why is it important?

A solid vocabulary helps a child across the academic disciplines. The more words your child knows, the more likely it is for him to figure them out when he sees them in text. It will also be easier for him to understand new concepts in class.

What can I do at home?

Engage your child in conversation to add new words to his vocabulary.

Read to and with your child.

When reading with your child, be sure he understands the meaning of the words in the text.

Ask your child to share new words he has learned after reading.
